About Us

ESCAPEMENT is an online magazine aimed at individuals with a passion for watch collecting, who appreciate “the finer things in life”. It is owned and operated by Angus Davies and his wife, Heidi Davies. Angus regularly writes reviews on timepieces which pique his interest, whilst Heidi edits all of his work. In addition, guest writers often contribute to ESCAPEMENT, providing an alternative view of the world of luxury.

In a society where the perfunctory manufacture of low cost goods is driven by a need to satisfy the demands of the mass market, traditional skills and craftsmanship are often overlooked. Moreover, a misconception that the consumer is merely paying a premium for the brand name alone is misplaced in many instances.

The purpose of ESCAPEMENT is to help readers understand the intricacies of haute horlogerie by providing an insight behind the scenes of the watchmaking industry and conveying the craftsmanship employed by some of the world’s finest watchmakers.

Finer Things in Life

Readers of discerning taste, who appreciate a no-compromise timepiece, often display a fascination with other luxury items produced with great skill and care, including bespoke tailoring, fine wine, prestigious cars and writing instruments. Periodically, ESCAPEMENT ventures off-piste, taking time out from discussing watches, to explore other examples of luxury, where the word ‘compromise’ is not part of the lexicon employed and where skill and tradition are equally evident. Our articles explain the craftsmanship employed and the subtle features which substantiate premium pricing.

Whilst some readers may not be able to afford every item featured, the aim of the site is to inform readers and allow them to momentarily “take the time to escape ….. to the finer things in life”.

Editorial standards

Whilst ESCAPEMENT is partially funded by advertising, it frequently declines revenue from brands whose products do not appeal to the editorial team. Moreover, all featured watches are subjected to a ‘hands-on’ appraisal and, if felt meritorious, discussed at length in minute detail. This does not mean that all watches are perfect, few seldom are, but on balance if a timepiece proffers virtue, then editorial coverage often ensues. Moreover, ESCAPEMENT endeavour to use real ‘live images’ in order to add value to the relationship with readers.

Ultimately, the opinions expressed by ESCAPEMENT are the author’s own and may not always agree with those held by readers. Furthermore, no warranties are attached to the reviews, but they are proffered free of charge, revealing notable honesty at all times.
