Baume & Mercier Hampton MOA 10032
Follow Route 27
Angus Davies reviews the Baume & Mercier Hampton MOA 10032. This rectangular shaped watch from the Genevan brand, features a chronograph housed within a very handsome case.
Take the New York State Route 27 and head out of Brooklyn and continue east towards the Hamptons.
If you visit the town of East Hampton you will be greeted with designer boutiques, Peconic farmland, Polo horses galloping in spirited fashion and museums detailing the history of the town dating back to the early 17th century when English settlers first arrived.
The beaches are expansive with ecru sand. They neighbour snow white timber clad homes and gentle ocean breeze soothes any potential furrowed brow.
East Hampton is the personification of elegance and is felicitous in character. It is the perfect metaphor for the charming chronograph from Baume & Mercier which bears the name of this locale.
The Hampton MOA 10032 is inspired by a 1940’s Baume & Mercier but presented in stainless steel rather than gold and with the added complication of a chronograph. It is the latest evolution of the original, distilled into a wondrous shape.
The case is rectangular, relatively large in scale, measuring 34mm x 46.8mm.
The first thing that distinguishes this case as something a little special is the domed sapphire glass. Arcing over the face of the watch, it provides a clear view of the dial, yet imparts a decadent, indulgent pleasure that surpasses lesser, mere mundane offerings.
The stainless steel is highly polished adding to the sense of luxury.
Observe the watch from the side and the grace of its lines is evident. The domed crystal reaches upwards, engaging with its wearer. The bezel sides of the case are scalloped, descending to reveal more crystal true to the Art-deco form. This provides greater illumination of the dial but without glare or distraction and of course, a strong style element.
The interhorns seemlessly integrate with the case with minimal intrusion.
The chrono pushers are located at 2 o’clock and 4 o’clock, rectangular in shape and sit in line with the crown forming consistent protrusions from the flowing form.
If the wearer removes the watch from their wrist they can admire the caseback. It is fitted with sapphire crystal affording a view of the magnificent movement within.
The dial is silver in colour, almost square, the height slightly greater than the width.
A combination of Roman numerals and hobnail shaped indices signify the hours with a few exceptions. At 3 o’clock and 9 o’clock square shaped chrono counters are registered on the voters roll and at 6 o’clock the date aperture resides.
The chapter ring is punctuated with small black markings, simple in presentation yet discreet in delivery.
The chrono counters feature black Arabic numerals, with those numerals positioned most northernly on each subdial depicted in contrasting red.
The hands are blued and provide interest but also remind their wearer this is a high quality timepiece.
The manufacturer’s name is presented on the dial as well as text informing the wearer the calibre is self-winding. The most important word below the nomenclature of this historical brand is “Genève”.
Genève has a rich tradition of watch making dating back to early Calvinism and despite the brand name “Hampton”, the wearer should not forget, this is a Swiss watch with excellent credentials.
Baume & Mercier have used a Swiss manufacture movement from a prestigious source.
The owner can admire the movement courtesy of the aforementioned sapphire caseback.
The calibre is automatic, using a skeletonised rotor with the company’s Phi logo beautifully integrated.
Beyond the rotor, Côte de Genève motif is visible on the bridges. This is further testament to the quality of the timepiece.
The finissage of the movement is exemplary.
Baume & Mercier is a considered purchase. It says the owner has taste, does not follow the crowd but has done their research and seeks quality and value.
I use the term value with care, this is not a cheap watch or a lesser timepiece than marques with greater brand awareness. Based on the quality of the finishing and its flawless fabrication, this chronograph represents an intelligent purchase for the price point.
The Hamptons symbolise family values, fine dining, gentle strolls on sandy shores and a phrase close to my heart, “the finer things in life”. This watch fits this lifestyle perfectly with its handsome face and toned torso.
The Rolling Stones may have sung about getting kicks on Route 66, however, the pleasures I seek are more wholesome and can be found at a destination along New York State Route 27 and this watch would suit the occasion perfectly.
